Domestic Minor Sex Trafficking Project

For the last decade Shared Hope International (SHI) has been combating child sex trafficking around the world, working with the women and children devastated by the effects of the commercial sex industry, and furthering victim identification and access to services. Through a project funded by the U.S. Department of Justice, SHI will reinforce Human Trafficking Task Forces in ten areas in the United States. SHI will provide Task Forces and the larger community in which they work with tools to increase identification of  child sex trafficking victims and improve access to and delivery of services to these victims in accordance with the Trafficking Victims Protection Act of 2000 and its subsequent reauthorizations.

SHI implemented Assessments in eleven areas. These assessments look at the access to and delivery of services for child sex trafficking victims (also known as domestic minor sex trafficking victims) in practice and on paper with the goal of revealing deficiencies as well as highlighting best practices to facilitate the service delivery and access. Each Human Trafficking Task Force received the site-specific assessment report to use as a possible springboard to action to address the problem of DMST in their area.

Educational curriculum and outreach materials are being designed to increase community awareness on how to identify child sex trafficking. These materials are tailored to the audience and use appropriate language and approaches.

Training on the identification of child sex trafficking victims are provided to first responders, including law enforcement officers, NGOs, governmental child protection agencies and others. This training includes a Training of Trainers for members of each Human Trafficking Task Force to continue the awareness raising.

Funding for effective projects to improve, initiate or expand the access and delivery of the services to these victims were provided to NGOs and other community-based organizations.
