Former Congresswoman Linda Smith, founder of Shared Hope International, joined President George W. Bush as he signed into law the Trafficking Victims Protection Reauthorization Act of 2005 (TVPRA), HR972, on Tuesday, January 10, 2006.
In his 2005 inaugural address, President Bush said that trafficking victims are deprived of their most basic human rights and human trafficking is considered a form of modern-day slavery. He promised that he, the Congress, and the American people are united in an effort to eradicate trafficking in persons—internationally and within US borders—because this global crime opposes the universal value of freedom. This breakthrough legislation both strengthens and expands laws against human trafficking at home and abroad.
