Legislation passed in the 2010 Maryland State Legislative session:
- increased penalties for traffickers
- reached out to victims of human trafficking
Thanks to your support, two crucial pieces of legislation were signed into law by Governor O' Malley on May 20!
Human trafficking is an egregious crime that impacts men, women and children across the world, in the United States and even in your home state of Maryland. On January 7 2010 Shelby Lewis from Temple Hills, MD pleaded guilty to charges of prostituting at least four underage girls between 2006 and 2009 in downtown D.C. and Maryland. Maryland already has a law that prohibits human trafficking, but three pieces of legislationwere introduced to the Maryland legislature to strengthen this law.
DIED ON FLOOR - Asset forfeiture legislation will require all money and valuables of a person convicted of human trafficking and used in connection with, or gained from human trafficking, to be used to fund further investigations and prosecutions of human trafficking, as well as services for victims. PASSED! Legislation to increase penalties for criminals who subject adults to human trafficking and penalize those who knowingly take part in such criminal networks will increase the risks for human traffickers. (Sponsors: Senator Forehand, and Delegates Waldstreicher and Raskin)
