Fiji is a source, transit, and destination country for women trafficked for sexual exploitation and forced labor. No laws specifically address trafficking in persons, although the code prohibits procuring a woman to become a prostitute, kidnapping, and bonded or forced labor. Last year there was an increase in persons arriving or transiting the country with false travel documents, but no official reports of trafficking.
SHI outreach has verified that young Chinese women are being worked in garment factories by day and prostituted by night. We will continue our efforts to bring justice to those victimized through our Predator Project.
Shared Hope International operates a Home of Hope in Fiji. The facility, currently under construction, already cares for 24 women and their children, all victims of sex trafficking. Upon completion, it will be able to house over 200 women and children. In addition to educational and counseling facilities provided, the women are able to gain business training and skills, and build equity for their future through the WIN program.
Providing an Education. Shared Hope is building a schoolhouse at the Home of Hope village as a part of the current construction in Fiji. Education, even at the grade school level, costs money in Fiji. With a schoolhouse, we will be able to provide free education for the children of trafficking victims living at the Home of Hope. It is also an opportunity to create revenue, providing education for other families in the community. The school gives job opportunities to restored women at the Village, like Nalini who can work as a teacher while her small son attends the preschool.
(I would like to support this project now)
