Singapore is a destination country for women and girls trafficked from China, Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia, the Philippines, and Vietnam for sexual exploitation. Some women and girls travel to Singapore voluntarily for prostitution or non-sexual work, and then are deceived or coerced into sexual servitude. A small but significant number of Singapore's estimated 140,000 foreign domestic workers continue to experience abusive employment conditions that may be considered involuntary servitude. Authorities in Singapore tolerate prostitution, authorize brothels in traditional red-light districts, and do not criminalize the prostitution of 16 and 17- year-old minors, contrary to international law.
In 2005, Shared Hope International partnered with UNIFEM Singapore to host our Sixth and final "Next Steps" Conference. This conference included leaders from 12 nations in an unprecedented gathering of government officials and civilians to galvanize efforts in the fight against sex tourism and trafficking throughout the region. During this time the ASEAN Secretary General launched a public awareness campaign to combat the commercial sexual exploitation of children.
(I'd like to support Shared Hope International's life giving efforts)
